CHUCK WON HIS FIRST 'OSCAR' FOR BEST ACTOR PLAYING THE ROLE OF JUDAH BEN-HUR IN 1959 IN THE FILM TITLED BEN-HUR. THE FILM WON A TOTAL OF 11 ACADEMY AWARDS. IT HAS NOT BEEN SURPASSED BY ANY OTHER MOVIE---EQUALED ONLY WITH 'TITANTIC'(1998).
THE OTHER ACTORS WHICH WERE NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR IN 1959 WITH CHUCK WERE: LAURENCE HARVEY (ROOM AT THE TOP), JACK LEMMON (SOME LIKE IT HOT), PAUL MUNI (THE LAST ANGRY MAN), AND JAMES STEWART (ANATOMY OF A MURDER).
ON THE WAY INTO THE AWARDS BANQUET, JIMMY STEWART STOPPED TO WISH CHUCK 'GOOD LUCK' AND HE ALSO TOLD CHUCK, "I HOPE YOU WIN, CHUCK---I REALLY MEAN THAT!" THIS WAS VERY SPECIAL TO CHUCK TO HAVE RECEIVED SUCH GOOD WISHES FROM AN ACTOR WHICH HE ADMIRED GREATLY. THE AWARD FOR BEST ACTOR WAS ANNOUNCED BY SUSAN HAYWARD, WHICH CO-STARRED WITH CHUCK IN HIS MOVIE: THE PRESIDENT'S LADY (1953). CHUCK WALKED UP TO THE STAGE TO ACCEPT HIS AWARD. HE KISSED SUSAN ON THE LEFT CHEEK AND WAS PRESENTED THE OSCAR. CHUCK'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH IS BELOW:
"I WOULD LIKE ESPECIALLY TO THANK WILLY, CHRISTOPHER FRYE & SAM ZIMBALIST--WHO GAVE MORE THAN ANY OF US. THANK YOU."

A MONTAGE OF HIS WORKS WAS DISPLAYED-REVIEWING HIS FILM, STAGE AND HUMANITARIAN WORKS. THIS NIGHT WAS A MOMENT TO LOOK BACK ON A RICH AND REWARDING CAREER AS ONE OF HOLLYWOOD'S MOST ENDURING STARS. CHUCK MADE A BRIEF ACCEPTANCE SPEECH ENDING WITH THIS: "THIS AWARD IS A GREAT HONOR FOR WHICH I AM DEEPLY GRATEFUL TO RECEIVE. "
