Charlton Heston is one of the most dedicated and talented actors of our time. His movies are highly regarded as some of the best epic movies in motion picture history. He is respected and well liked by his peers, and has earned an international reputation as an outstanding leading man. 'Chuck,' as his friends call him, approaches his job in not only a thoroughly professional manner, but is also deeply interested in improving the movie industry and has deep beliefs in up-holding the constitutional ideals of our founding fathers.
Chuck has starred in some of the most sucessful pictures ever made in film history. In fact two of his pictures, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS(1956) and BEN-HUR(1959), are on the all-time top grossing picture's list. He has won countless awards for his acting and philanthropic work. Chuck has been awarded twice the Oscar. The first Oscar was awarded to Charlton for his role in BEN-HUR in 1959 as Best Actor for that year. The second Oscar-'Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award' was presented to him in 1977. In 1997 Chuck was a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Achievement in the Performing Arts Award, one of just 105 individuals ever to receive this award.
Charlton made his Broadway stage debute in ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA in 1947. He got his big break in Katharine Cornell's Shakespearen production. Chuck stated that he was sure he got this role because "I'm over 6 feet and Miss Cornell is a tall woman and likes tall actors around."
Television started off with a boom and Chuck was one of the first lucky Broadway actors to get a start in this new medium. He played leading roles on new TV shows such as: 'Studio One.' A few of his TV roles were in the productions of JANE EYRE (1948), WUTHERING HEIGHTS(1949), THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (1949), and MacBETH (1950).
Chuck has made many TV movies and has done countless plays on stage, when his schedule permits. As Chuck has been reported to say about that his work on stage it helps----"to renew my passport."
Not only an actor, Charlton has also directed. He made his movie directing debut with ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA(1973), which he played the role of Marc Antony. He also directed MOTHER LODE(1982) and A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS(1988), which is a film he did for TV.
Chuck has toured for the State Department's Cultural Presentation Program and has been a delegate to the Berlin Film Festival. He has visited troops fighting during the Viet Nam War and was a strong supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1981, Charlton was named co-chairman of President Ronald Reagan's Task Force on the Arts and Humanities. Charlton has served on the National Council on the Arts and was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild six times. He has held the office of Chairman and President of the American Film Institute and served four terms as President of the National Rifle Association of America. He has authored fives books, one being his autobiography. In 2003 Chuck received the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM from President Bush. Also, the American Film Institute has honored Chuck with an award named after him, which he was the first recipient .
Chuck was married to Lydia Clarke Heston on March 17, 1944. They have been married for more than 50 years, the father of Fraser and Holly and a grandfather too. He is above all a 'family man' and takes this role most seriously. Chuck and Fraser have set up Agamemnon Films, which is a film, television and digital production company established in 1981. He continually supported his children in their own professional careers and is a loving grandfather and husband. Chuck survived a bout with prostate cancer and had undergone radiation treatments. He also battled Alzheimer's with strength and courage for six years with the help of his loving family and friends.
"Mr. Heton died at his home in Beverly Hills, CA with his wife, Lydia, at his
side," stated family spokesman Bill Powers on April 5, 2008. Memorial Services were held on April 12, 2008 at the Episcopal Parish of St. Matthew's Church where Mr. Heston regularly worshipped and attended Sunday services since the early 1980s.
As it has been stated about Charlton Heston: "He is a GOOD man," which is rare to find these days in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Chuck has referred to himself as "A RENAISSANCE MAN" because of his love for culture and The Arts. With each of his works, he has helped us all to be 'reawakened' and to experience a 'rebirth' through his movies and stage work.
